With carbon emissions being at an all time high, single use plastics reaching record levels, and the environment being at the forefront of everyone’s minds, here at spring clean homes have made a pledge to to our bit to help the environment and raise awareness leading to a brighter, safer, and better future for our children, and children’s children. Here is a list of the changes we have pledged to during our running of our business both in front, and behind the scenes

We have made the decision to stop giving out overshoes to our clients when we finish a carpet clean. These are single use, so was a fair bit of plastic needing 100s of years to break down in the environment? We could quite comfortably be reducing the amount of single use plastic by 3000 overshoes a year here. That’s a whole load of plastic saved from the environment.

We are making a real effort to cut down on our carbon emmisions by reducing the amount of travelling we do. Firstly, we have stopped travelling to 95% of on-site quotations, which has actually resulted in more value for money too for our customers as they are typically paying less for our services. We are also grouping our jobs together more efficiently in terms of location. This can sometimes mean a slightly longer lead time, but usually only by a couple of days. We believe we are worth the wait 😁

Buying local
To reduce the amount of delivery miles it takes to get products, wherever possible, we buy from our local suppliers (the chaps down at Total Supplies are a great team to deal with too)

Buying UK products
There are some amazing carpet cleaning products made here in the UK, so wherever possible, we purchase these too.

Buying in bulk
Where we can not buy local, we are cutting down on our deliveries by buying in bulk too. Further reducing our carbon footprint

An eco friendly carpet cleaning spray
There is never one size fits all when it comes to cleaning products. Soiling levels, types, individual spots and stains, carpet types and constructions, and balancing pH levels with any product already present deep down in the pile. Due to this, we are unable to simply replace all our products and just use one. We have however, introduced a new woolsafe eco friendly product cleaner prespray that we try to use as the first instance.

Eco spotters
For every job over £100 plus vat, we now leave a bottle of 500ml eco friendly carpet cleaner liquid. This not only reduces the amount of travelling we may do for a small stain job, but is so safe and non toxic so reduces the chance of a bleaching agent or harmful chemical being introduced into the carpet

Paperless bank accounts
We have recently contacted our business and requested that monthly postal statements stop. This has now been replaced with online statements so reducing carbon emmisions

Instead of printing out receipts every month to give to our bookkeeper, we have converted to an online app where we email email receipts to the online accounts reducing the need to print them out. A4 Paper receipts that we receive are reused as scrap paper. This also have cut down on driving to the accountant a few times a month.

Phasing out 12 month postal reminders
Since we started in 2012, we have been sending out yearly reminders to customers for their annual carpet clean. We could quite easily send between 500-800 pieces of post each month. We have now replaced these with email or sms reminders. This also reduced the amount of ink cartridges that we are using

Paperless invoicing
The booking system that we use has the feature of using email and sms for all correspondence, so we have taken full advantage of this. Quotes & invoices are now sent digitally. This also improves our service as this means our clients receive these much quicker. A further saving of our paper useage

More water efficient
We are more conscious of the amount of water we use for our hot water extraction cleans. We are now filling up by a bucket at a time, and not having buckets of water ready just in case we need them as these can sometimes lead to unnecessary waste

Uniform change
We are trying to produce the best, most professional service possible and clean, tidy uniform is a vital part of this. We noticed that our white and green uniforms were starting to look a little tired, tatty and dirty especially when undertaking outdoor work, so we have phased these out. We are now using black uniforms which are much tidier, and last much longer. We use the old uniforms for our non public facing work such as machinery maintenance, cleaning the equipment and even when washing the vans.

Mobile charger
Some of our equipment requires regular charging, so we have purchased an external battery pack that is charged automatically when our vans are going from job to job. This means we are always fully charged and ready for each job, but also that we’ve saved a little electricity also

Supplier receipts
Sometimes when we make a purchase, our suppliers give us the option to email our receipt as opposed to printing out a paper one. We take advantage of this

Less banking
To reduce our number of trips to the bank, we are encouraging our clients to pay by card. We have a few clients who still like to pay by cheque, and technological advances mean we are able to use an app to upload these into our bank account, less driving to lloyds!

Solar charging our work phones
For smaller items such as phones, we are using solar chargers that we Carry in our van

Cleaning water
Where possible, we have reduced our cleaning water temperature to 60 degrees. We have also reduced the pressure on the machinery to no more than 300psi (varies from job to job)

In 2020, we realised that we were making unnecessary trips to our office in Ramsgate, meaning more travelling emissions, but also electric, lighting and heating. We now use a laptop for the day to day running of this business, an added benefit of this is that we charge from our external battery pack. Wherever possible, we put the laptop into sleep mode, and overnight, we turn it off

Encourage podcasts
To encourage awareness of the environment and climate in our business, we now listen to earth911 podcast weekly. This is a contestant reminder of the importance of what we are trying to achieve, as well as giving us more useful tips and to further tweaks and changes we are able to make in our business

Reduce meat
As the owners of the business, myself (neil) and my wife Helen have reduced our meat consumption for us and our children and regularly use quorn or vegetables as a substitute. Less trees being cut down for grazing space

Filtered water
To save on plastic from bottled water, we encourage all staff to drink filtered water from a reuseable water bottle and not buy bottled.

Don’t print emails
A gentle reminder on the bottom of our emails to not print out if it’s not necessary

We recycle
We are making much more of an effort when it comes to recycling on a day to day basis

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Ripples Appear In The Carpet?2021-10-05T21:00:12+00:00

Very rarely ripples may appear in the carpet after professional cleaning. Generally this happens on one or two carpets a year so very unlikely. If it does, it is almost always a wool carpet, and will go back to normal within 72 hours.

What Method Of Cleaning Do You Use?2021-10-05T20:59:47+00:00

Generally we use hot water extraction as per NCCA guidelines, but occasionally if more appropriate for the carpet, we will use a low or very low moisture cleaning system. These are rare and generally not used in domestic situations, but always happy to discuss.

Do You Use Steam?2021-10-05T20:59:19+00:00

We use hot water extraction which is generally at around 60-70 degrees. This is generally what is referred to as steam cleaning as it appears to be steaming at the wand end. Cleaning at 100 degrees with steam would cause many issues and damage the carpet.

Can I Just Hire A Machine?2021-10-05T20:58:55+00:00

Absolutely, but please be aware that there is a reason we undergo as much training as we do. We are able to identify issues that may arise. Its also worth considering that a shop rented machine may not have been sanitised between visits so you could be cross contaminating your carpet with the previous users dog wee, blood, or worse!

Shop rented machines also tend to not be as powerful as our machinery, so if you do hire a machine, make sure you give as much attention to the drying as you do to the actual clean itself. Opening windows is a must, and if possible try to do this on a warm day.

The product that is generally supplied with these machines is a general cleaner. We advise that you try and match your problem to the bottle of cleaner that is supplied.

Hiring a machine from shops will generally not remove issues of dog urine odours as this may already be deeper rooted in the carpet. Sometimes, carpet needs to be pulled up and underlay to be replaced.

Will All Stains Come Out?2021-10-05T20:58:22+00:00

We endevour to remove all stains, but if the stain has already caused permanent damage to the fibres, this may not be possible. With any stain, we recommend you do not use household cleaners on it prior to professional help as a combination of the product and scrubbing/agitation can cause damage.

Think of a radish and a carrot. A radish can be white on the inside and pink on the outside, this is how we describe a carpet stain that has not been scrubbed or worked on and the stain remains on top of the fibres. A carrot is orange all the way through, so could have already caused permanent damage to the fibres, permanently stained carpet.

The type of carpet also plays a part in stains being ‘removeable’. A wool carpet for example can easily absorb stains as it has ‘fish scales’, where as a polypropylene carpet is more likely to repel stains as it is more plastic based.

Generally stain removers from the shops are just that, a general stain remover. We use a whole number of different products to match the product and technique to the exact stain that we are dealing with.

Will My carpets Get Dirty After Cleaning?2021-10-05T20:57:55+00:00

This is a common myth unfortunately. Your will notice that your carpets get soiled at the same rate as before cleaning but because the carpet is cleaner, it can appear more noticeable.

When detergents are used, a residue can be left in the carpet, meaning the carpet can go sticky and attract more soil very easily and quickly. We clean using the latest technology and solutions, so strong chemicals and detergents are a no no for us. We rinse through any cleaning solution that we use with an acidic rinse solution. As well as giving the carpet a ‘conditioner’, this also leaves the carpet safe on the pH scale.

Will My Carpet Shrink?2021-10-05T20:56:24+00:00

We have undergone extensive training to identify points of concern, so can certainly advise if we think there is a danger of shrinkage. One reason for shrinkage is the introduction of too much water to the carpet that the face fibers, or backing absorb. With the extensive drying steps that we take, this is not likely to happen.

Another reason for shrinkage is the type of carpet that we are cleaning. If we are faced with a Belgium Wilton (VERY RARELY) for example, we will advise of our findings and discuss with customer. There is a chance this type of carpet will ‘shrink’ due to moisture levels. If a carpet ever does come away from the wall, we work with a number of local carpet fitters who can stretch the carpet back onto the gripper rods.

Do I Have To Move Furniture?2021-10-05T20:55:09+00:00
We request that you move any little bits of furniture that you can, ie your ornaments from the sides, small chairs and tables etc. If you are unable to do this, please do not worry though as we are more than happy to help out here.
During the cleaning process, we can move whatever furniture possible, we have sliders for sofas, chairs etc. We are unable to move any large book cases for example, cabinets or expensive items, or televisions (insurance reasons).
When Can I Walk On My Carpets After Cleaning2021-10-05T20:54:25+00:00

As soon as we have finished our cleaning, you can walk on the carpet immediately. Most furniture can be placed back on the carpet, we will always advise here. Furniture with a screw under the leg for example, we recommend not to place back as the contact with moisture could cause rust.

Similarly, any furniture with a painted finish or varnish should be kept off the carpet until completely dry. We can always advise here

Any furniture with a flat bottom, we recommend you do not place back on the carpet until completely dry as the carpet needs to have a flow of air to dry. Worst case scenario here is that moisture can be trapped under furniture, and mould occur.

How Long Do Carpets Take To Dry2021-10-05T20:53:22+00:00
After our cleaning process, naturally the carpets are left slightly damp. Drying times can depend on a whole range of factors, so there is no one answer here. If your carpet is heavily soiled, and needs more moisture introduced and rinsed through the carpet, the drying time can be longer.
The best way to get the carpet dry after our cleaning process is to open some windows to create a through breeze across the top of the carpet, naturally a warm sunny day does help here too. During the cleaning process, we are also drying the carpet too with our machinery, and can also place air movers on the carpet to speed up the drying process. We leave overshoes at the property so you can safely walk on the carpet immediately after we leave.
As a guide though, we would say a few hours to have the carpet perfectly dry depending on the above factors.
How Much Does Carpet Cleaning Cost?2021-10-05T20:51:13+00:00

Our prices vary from room to room, and is based on the 8 step NCCA guidelines. This means your carpet will receive a thorough deep clean and not just a quick once over with the wet vacuum. The quality of the work is in the preparation. Our prices can be seen at www.springcleanhomes.com/price-guide but of course if you prefer we pop out to see you, we are more than happy to do that too.
